Frank Scalise (1893-1957) was a prominent mobster from New York who rose to power in the early 20th century. He was a member of the Castellammarese Mafia faction, which later became part of the larger Genovese crime family.
Scalise was involved in a number of criminal activities including extortion, racketeering, illegal gambling, and hijacking. He was known for his violent temper and was involved in numerous violent confrontations with rival gangs.
In 1931, Scalise was one of the mobsters targeted in the famous "Night of the Sicilian Vespers," in which several Mafia leaders were gunned down in a power struggle. Scalise was shot multiple times but survived and continued his criminal activities.
He was eventually arrested in 1944 for extortion and spent several years in prison. Upon his release, he continued to be involved in organized crime until his death in 1957, when he was gunned down in a restaurant in the Bronx.
